Fishing in murky waters: Berlin's wastewater is a treasure trove of information
Wastewater is tested routinely for the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in many countries around the world and in some German cities as well. This allows us to monitor the spread of the virus and the emergence of new variants – regardless of people testing themselves. But not only corona can be detected in wastewater. We can identify any virus that is a nuisance to us and causes flu or diarrhea, for example. Thousands of new viruses might be there, as well as useful molecular tools for biotechnology. We present our methods to you and explain what we have learned so far.
