The concept “Ladder of being” can be traced back to antiquity. Later, it became a pillar of the Christian worldview, organizing all life on a scale of increasing complexity from minerals to God. When Carl Linnaeus formulated his taxonomy, it was shaped by this tradition. Although these views may seem naïve today, the giants were right about one thing: the more we learn about nature, the clearer we see its hierarchy.
