Random Fractals from Polymers to your Fridge Magnets (Guillaume Baverez)
Statistical mechanics is the study of large systems of randomly interacting particles. It describes such diverse phenomena as magnetisation, coffee flowing through a percolator, or the growth of polymers (to name a few). These systems usually have a "critical temperature" in which they exhibit complicated but beautiful random fractal patterns, which can be described by quantum field theory. The talk will give an introduction to such systems with many illustrations.
