Shiny Spaghetti in the Brain
In our brain, there are proteins that don‘t have a specific shape – like spaghetti! But unlike the spaghetti we like to eat, spaghetti-like proteins can be harmful to the brain, especially as the brain gets old. This results in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer‘s and Parkinson‘s‘ disease. Why? In many of these diseases, the spaghetti gets entangled. In our lab, we use lasers to shine a light on this brain pasta to find clues on why they get tangled up. One spaghetti at a time, over the range of different scales!
